We arrived in Athens too late to go to the
Acropolis or the National Museum. After a fun-filled ride through
downtown searching for a gas station, we returned the car and checked

|We got there right as the Acropolis opened, so it wasn't crowded. The Parthenon was built in the 5th century BC, after the Persians destroyed the previous monuments on the Acropolis. The roof has been missing since 1687, when a stray bullet ignited the gunpowder and munitions stored in the building.|

|The National Archaeological Museum contains all of the valuable stuff found at sites throughout the country. We saw the gold grave goods from Mycenae, frescoes from Tiryns, and endless marble heads.|
