Itinerary
Days 1-6: kayaking the Tobacco Range
We flew into Belize City and met up with Island Expeditions,
the organizers of our kayak trip. The next morning,
we drove to Dangriga, then boated out to the reef and our kayaks.
We spent our first two days kayaking and snorkeling from
Tobacco Caye. Then we put sails on
the kayaks and sailed south to
South Water Caye. We stayed
there for two more nights before returning to the mainland.
Days 6-8: visiting ruins, caving, and canoeing around San Ignacio
We were glad we had flexible plans when our morning flight to Flores was
cancelled because of fog. We found a collectivo and headed west, stopping
in San Ignacio. After lunch, we went to the
Cahal Pech, the Mayan ruins just
outside town. The next day, we waded and climbed about half a mile into
Actun Tunichil Muknal cave.
The next day, we decided to take it easy, and floated down the
Macal River for the day.
Days 8-9: exploring Tikal
We got a ride with one of the day tours across the border into Gutemala
and on to Tikal. We spent the night at
the Jungle Lodge, and had the ruins to ourselves in the afternoon and
early morning.
Days 9-10: visiting Flores
In the early afternoon, we headed to the small island town of
Flores. We visited the market, walked
all around the island, and cruised around the island in a lancha before
flying back to Belize City to catch our flight home.
