Southern Food
We tried lots of Southern food while we were there. Our hotel in Charleston
had a basic (not particularly Southern) breakfast, but we did go out for a
real Southern breakfast one morning. Paul drank gallons
of sweet tea; Kimberly tried it but preferred unsweet (not unsweetened, it's
unsweet).
- Waffle House (waffles and hash browns) - it was next to our airport hotel
the first night; we were so glad we'd ordered the waffles once we smelled
them cooking
- Carolina BBQ - Paul said it was yummy, Kimberly said it seemed like any other BBQ
- hush puppies - Evan really liked these
- shrimp & grits - just ok; we don't get why grits are so popular
- crab cakes - yes we have these at home, but with a different type of crab; not sure we can tell the difference though
- fried green tomatoes - this was a nouveau-Southern version, stacked
with feta cheese between the slices; the fried part was a tasty contrast to
the tartness
- grits with cheese - cheese makes everything better
- biscuits & gravy - this was soooo good; the sausage gravy was so thick
it didn't move when Kimberly turned her spoon upside down
- pecan-crusted fried chicken - yummy and not super-greasy
- fried okra - kinda like fried zucchini; anything that fried was edible..
- sweet tea - often too sweet even for Paul; he sometimes ordered unsweet
and added sugar himself, or diluted his sweet tea with Kimberly's unsweet
